My Manifesto

I believe my practice is very free and open still, I have begun to create and find my own style, yet I am still exploring my creative opportunities. Over the year I will be improving my client-designer relationship skills gaining an understanding of the correct way to approach a brief. By the end of the year I would have like to have my work recognised by an industry professional and work with one on a project. I would also like to gain myself a more active and professional online presence, such as a website. As well as a LinkedIn account that is successfully connecting with industry professionals. I would also like to understand the way that I can approach artists/designers I admire to even just talk about their work and progress, I will be exploring building my confidence to do so.

Summer - Level 4

Over summer 2017 I worked mainly full time at a bar in Birmingham called ‘Dubella’, over my time at the bar the managers changed hands. This meant they were going through a rebrand. Rather than them looking elsewhere, I saw this as an opportunity to use my practice. I approached the new owners and explained that I would be happy to design the new branding and menus, to infit with a style of the establishment. They wanted to aim towards a younger market, that would be interested in bars that serve cocktails etc. The process itself allowed me to develop my professional practice in a freelancing capacity. It also allowed me to have my first experience of paid work and some of the issues that can arise with such. Overall it had taught me that I can bring my design practice into most things I do, as well as incorporate it into activities where I never thought it would be used. Over the year of level 5 I hope that I would be able to develop my freelancing skills and get a better understanding of the industry and how I should approach it. Although I would also like to use level 5 to work towards gaining some experience within a graphic design agency and understand the more corporate side of design within the industry.

Module Evaluation

Overall this module has helped me learn a lot, in particular a lot about myself as well as designing. I've learnt how to correctly present myself to get across the ideas I want to in a clear and concise way, presentations that need to be or words they can solely be images I can still get across the point I wanted to the audience. Terms of audience I've also learn how to design to suit an audience in terms of both my personal branding, and studio brief one, both of which had a particular audience in which I needed to present my ideas in a way that was clear get conceptual. This module has helped me improve a lot in terms of getting out there within the Leeds creative community. I have visited galleries and exhibitions and even other countries in order to extend my design knowledge. Although, time management was a massive part of this module having other modules running alongside of it, I don't think I dealt with it within the best way; in terms of dedicating my time towards personal development and going out and seeing things, and staying in doing work this is something I want to work on. Within level 5 I want to develop my own personal brand more, I think as I progress this will be a massive part of my design career so far; and is needed to be taken seriously by clients within the design world so I can start doing my own more personal projects. I want to also visit more places and different environments to understand how change of environment affects design and how audience affects the way in which you design. Within PPP I found the talks which were telling you how to get out there how to improve and how to present properly inspiring and motivating, as these wall areas that I was struggling with beforehand. In light of that reflection these are also areas I am now confident in and want to pursue more. To do so over this summer I will be looking for internships within design as well as considering a personal project which I can take place alongside my studies next year to help with my personal visual development. I believe the designs are created within studio brief one, two and three were successful, in terms of giving myself a visual voice and style, which is incredibly likely to change; yet it has given me the steps towards knowing how to start branding myself as a designer and considering my footprint on the design world.
