Life's a Pitch - Group Rationale

The Brief:
We are now heading toward a new image as Leeds Arts University and we are expanding into a new extended facility (building). A new logo has been created by Peter and Paul in Sheffield. This brief is to create a wayfinding and imagery for the building and the various courses and facilities. I will attempt to gain plans and elevations to aid this. The work should cover all areas of this wayfinding and human interaction and will be to proposal level. A rationale of who and where we can connect with staff, visitors and students.
This investigation should be as wide and exciting as achievable, there are NO restrictions and how this is achieved is down to research and awareness of what wayfinding is, externally accessed maybe, do not get bogged down with detail unless you feel it is important. Consider BIG IDEAS and try to be innovative, creative in all areas. As mentioned, manufacturing is NOT essential, concepts that cover the brief in the most 'fresh' creative and reasoned way. Your presentation at the end of this can be pdf (deck, if you aren't aware of this term, find out).
Considerations:
  • What skills and services do you have to offer individually and as a group?
I can offer in-depth research techniques and ensure that our design and development are relevant to our audience and the context in which they should be used. I am also good at envisioning and relaying content into the correct situations, which could add to the impact of our overall pitch. I am also confident with public speaking, ensuring our ideas come across to our audience as clearly as possible.
  • Who is your target market?
Our target market is students, staff and visitors. Visitors will be the main focus of the task, they will be completely new to the building whereas staff and students will be using the building on a daily basis.
  • What form will your showcase take?
Presentation with mocked up visuals and handouts, depending on outcome possible prototype.
  • What are your costs, charges and financial considerations?
Material costs, labour costs for installation, design time.
  • How will you structure your collective?
  • Who will be responsible for what?
  • How will you promote your showcase? To who? Using what media?
  • Is it set in a physical location? then where?
  • How will you manage communication through the group?
Mandatory Requirements:
  • Must be clear.
  • Easily Identifiable.
  • Concise.
  • A representative of the Universities identity/beliefs.

Deliverables:
  • A 10 minute Deck/pdf or similar presentation (including 3 minutes of Q&A)
  • Appropriate visual aids and printed material to support your presentation.
  • Evidence of the research and development of your presentation and visual material should be posted to your PPP blog and labelled with the module code. You should also post pdf versions of your presentation, notes and handouts to your PPP blog. Please save a PDF for submission.
Target Audience: Staff, Students and Visitors.

Getting paid for your work

This is the safest and simplest way to conduct your ‘business’.
Your Invoice goes to the Accounts

Department, not the originator of the brief, they do NOT want it.
The Accounts department are the ones
who get money in and pay money out, that’s all.

Some companies use the system, and the lack of supplier knowledge to slow down and even avoid paying (believe it or not)
By having your terms and conditions, your copyright notification etc, will illustrate
that you are aware of the legalities of and the professionalism of business.
By getting your ‘ducks’ in row, you will have a far better chance of avoiding ‘nasties’ in your practice and you will not only enjoy working but also afford to enjoy the other things in life.

1.You write out an estimate* for the job
and itemise that it will take a full day to complete.

2.You explain as they are a new client, your terms are 50% up front with a purchase order required.
3.The balance on supply of final files. 4.Copyright will be released on FULL and final payment.**
5.Any additional work will be charged at £XXX per hour and that they would be informed before doing any more work.
6. Kill Point. A project which is ‘killed’ before completion, all fees will remain chargeable to that point.

You then send your client a full breakdown of what you have been asked and your terms, as itemised on the last slide.
You ask for the Purchase Order (number) and their approval of your terms.
You wait until you should receive these before you start.

Copyright

if you put a copyright symbol on it and the date then it is your copyright, this does not cost money and still works.

no one, company, studio or agency can claim the work as their own unless they have a signed copyright assignation documents from the creator, prior to printing, duplicating or publishing the work, and that includes the internet.

if youre self employed, you usally own the interlectual property even if your work was commissioned by someone else - unless your contract with them gives them the rights.

The same goes both ways; never breach anothers copyright, it can cost you a lot of money and damage your reputation.

Public Domain: Generally speaking, artworks fall out of copyright and enter the
public domain in the UK 70 years after the death of the artist.

There are a few exceptions:
• Sound recordings, films, broadcasts and cable programmes are protected.
for 50 years from the date of making or the date of release if the release
occurs within 50 years of it being made.
• Engravings and photographs taken on or after 1 June 1957 that remained
unpublished on 1 August 1989 are protected until 2039, even if that is
longer than the life of the artist plus 70 years.
• Artworks that are made in an industrial process and marketed in sufficient
numbers may only be protected for a shorter period of 25 years
• Copyright in typographical arrangements of a published edition lasts for
25 years from the end of the year in which the edition was first published.

Limitations: Meaning things that are NOT covered by personal copyright.
Facts.
Conceptual ideas not expressed in tangible form.
Public domain as mentioned. Expired items as also mentioned.

Reproduction rights: What it is reproduced on.
On anything sold with your work applied. International reproduction.
Indemnity from those who incur you legal costs. ie: A child chokes on an item that carries
your work.
Bankruptcy of the users.
All advance payments of work cancelled to
be retained.
The right to have books audited on company failure.
No sub licensing of your work without permission and fee. Retention of all original works (if agreed)

Liscencing your work: In some cases you may be asked to ‘licence’ your work.
ie: A stock illustration/image/design on which you may
wish to retain the copyright.
You can ‘limit’ the license you allow to that of single use, meaning that they can use it for a single time, as
opposed to using it on printed material, website and say, exhibitions as well. This mean you license and gain a fee for each use.
“If I paid for it... ...I must own it?”
Because you ‘physically’ own
the work,
it does NOT mean they

intellectually own it automatically unlessYOU have it assigned in writing to them.

When you get a brief: When you get an enquiry that seems
to be heading towards a confirmed project and they send you a brief.
Acknowledge the receipt of the brief add some simple terms and conditions that will assure payment.
Keep it simple as some clients
are put off by ‘legalese’ and official looking contracts.

For example: I/we will undertake all work to the highest level possible. All work will be estimated and will only commence work on the full acceptance of said estimates.
All deadlines will be adhered to and you will be contacted in those rare cases that may delay any progress.
Any ‘New’ client will be expected to pay a deposit of (50%) of the estimated project prior
to commencement and full balance on supply of final files.

All payments will be transacted by Bank transfer and details will be supplied. Any copyright will be assigned on full and final payment of the brief.
Clients will be made aware of all licensing opportunities

that could be available.
Clients will issue a Purchase Order number prior to commencement of any work.

I/we look forward to commencing the project.

Life’s a pitch - Studio Brief 2

THE BRIEF:

This investigation should be as wide and exciting as achievable, there are NO restrictions and how this is achieved is down to research and awareness of what wayfinding is, externally accessed maybe, do not get bogged down with detail unless you feel it is important. Consider BIG IDEAS and try to be innovative, creative in all areas. As mentioned, manufacturing is NOT essential, concepts that cover the brief in the most 'fresh' creative and reasoned way. Your presentation at the end of this can be pdf (deck, if you aren't aware of this term, find out).
Presentations are up to the groups how they are presented and a considered 'rationale' is needed. This is a really 'native' brief and you will need to note all work on your PPP Blog as you go with a final post that sums up your individual take on this project together with your take on the 'collaborative' aspects of this brief.
Pitching:
  • rationale
  • groups of 5
  • blog developments
Five heads are better than one as long as they communicate. You will now have the luxury of six pairs of hands. How will you use them effectively? You will need to consider the following:

  • What skills and services do you have to offer individually and as a group?
  • Who is your target market?
  • What form will your showcase take?
  • What are your costs, charges and financial considerations?
  • How will you structure your collective?
  • Who will be responsible for what?
  • How will you promote your showcase? To who? Using what media?
  • Is it set in a physical location? then where?
  • How will you manage communication through the group?
You must make reference to the module resources materials, books and websites to demonstrate your understanding of basic marketing and business principles.
Responses to this brief should be recorded on your PPP Blog and should be labelled with the module code and appropriate 'Studio Brief Number'.
Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure that all work for this brief has been presented and labelled in line with these guidelines by the submission deadline. Work that is incorrectly labelled, posted to the wrong blog or is in anyway unclear or inaccessible will not be assessed
You should ensure that any material, discussions and reflections generated during taught sessions, workshop and group critiques are evidenced for assessment.
