During our stay in Barcelona we also decided to visit the
contemporary art museum, although not being design related it was interesting
to see how art changed depending on environment. I believe it's always useful
to go to art galleries to expand your visual exploration, this is something
I've done from a young age is a believe artwork helps broaden your creativity
and gave visual references and influences. The architecture of the building
itself was something that I found very inspiring, amongst the old streets of
Barcelona, it can be found with very angular construction made out of white
tile and glass. The contrast against the city and the contemporary nature
against the heritage of the country was an interesting concept, it showed how
times have changed; as does the work inside. The first exhibition was about the
food distribution during the Cold War, the art was conceptual. One of my
favourite pieces within the exhibition is a 60 m wall made out of stained
bread, in a variety of colours representing its variety and staple within the food
available at the time. There was also a typography element one of the
exhibitions which we saw, the type being laid on the table through vinyl and
the corresponding text made out of Perspex standing up from the table, my
understanding of the concept of this was having the text saying what was really
meant by what the words that were on the table. I also engaged with the piece of
simplistic and modernist graphic design presented in posters it is the most
simplistic design I have ever seen, yet it still works to a grid and you can
still see how the pieces relate in a series. The visit to this gallery allowed
me to broaden my visual understanding of the artwork in Barcelona, as well as
evaluate the graphic design that was found with in the artwork. This is
something I would like to do more in the surrounding area of Leeds.
