Studio Build Talk

Micheal C Place from Studio Build

Reference points:

  • Iron Maiden - inspired by the album art but not even knowing it was graphic design just enjoyed the imagery and the link to the music.
  • Motörhead - Saxon sleeve, inspired type and the logos.
  • Black Sabbath - type that stand the test of time, volume 4 cover.
  • Fascinated by architecture and technical drawing.
  • Cramps covers
  • The meteors
  • Some of the design didn't influence work but released an interest.
  • Neville Brody - The Face, work that inspired the way in which he wanted his graphic design to go, when tastes in graphic design became more sophisticated. Inspired by type and a lot of record sleeves. Suggests look at the graphic language by Neville Brody.

Letraset - a rub down sheet that could transfer type, very diy way to setting type. Get them through catalogues, which contains the types.

  • Biggest change in work for graphic design for himself was Rod Clarke, created underground magazine, was a key point of this is what graphic design can do and be and the way in which there isn't one type of graphic design.
  • Underground fed into musical interests which links design to graphics.
  • 8VO we're doing similar type of things, gave him a wake up call that this is really what graphic design could do.

Vaughn Oliver -

  • Big influence, still a current working graphic design.
  • Designed majority of the sleeves for 4AD records.
  • Collaging and using different materials to give a different alternative approach to Graphic Design.
  • Big characters producing big work, doing whatever he thought was right rather than following trends.
  • Cocteau Twins cover
  • Marrs pump up the volume cover

Trevor Jackson -

  • First design job.
  • Again record cover designs.

Ian Anderson -

  • Started working with in 92, analogue techniques still.
  • Abstract collage aethstetic.
  • Juan Atkins Cover.
  • Custom typefaces developed depending on what the client needs from their type.
  • Non commercial graphic design.

Calls himself

"problem solving interesting graphic designer, rather than a 'good' graphic designer"

Let's interests feed into and influence your design so your designs don't start to become dull.
