The Brunswick
During October of the first term, I really wanted to get
involved with the Leeds creative scene as it was one I wasn’t familiar with,
not being from the city of visiting the city prior to the start of my studies. The
best way I felt to be able to do so is start going to exhibitions and galleries,
the first of which I came across was Koryo Collective’s photographic display and
talk sharing their experience in North Korea. Titled ‘On The Run’ the
exhibition features three Yorkshire based photographers, all with different
thoughts on their travelling experience, journey through a state of total
control; in which they took part in their half a marathon.
The photographs depict what the state wanted them to see,
often featuring the countries beauty. It gives the audience a perspective view
of how the state adapts the route and visibility of what its guests are
permitted to see, bring to life tales of blacked out vans and a state washed
with pure devotion for its leader. At the event we were told about an experience
in which a restaurant gave the visitors the option of “beer 1, 2 or 3”, this is
an experience shared with us by all the branding of the beverages covered.
The event was interesting and the photography was highly
skilled, it allowed me to get a taste of what the Leeds creative community are
like and the way in which they come together with local businesses to share and
express their work.
