The brief itself was the reflect upon our time so far with the course
and within a university life environment, as I began to think about my achievements
and hurdles so far at university I was also considering the visuals that would
be a part of the poster. This is when the idea came to me to use the map of how
I get to and from the building every day, if I wasn’t doing such I wouldn’t be recognising
my mistakes, successes and challenges at all.
Liberty Park - Leeds College of Art |
With this concept I decided to take some screenshots of the map with both points of my student halls and Leeds College of Art on them, from which I marked at the route which I take if I would be walking to university; and also the route if I got a taxi, as this happens quite a lot. This is a good visual concept base my design around, I think it captures both the development I have made whilst in University and also within student living. These routes were drawn out on illustrator and rotated, this gave a vertical representation of my concept, this was due to lay out to be able to fit the text I needed on the poster.
Motif of Route |
The posters itself encompassed all of the aspects I picked up on within
my research, such as a simplistic yet effective main image based focal point,
and the text to fit round said piece. The line art had created a divided into
three identical copies, one being yellow, one cyan and the other magenta. I
wanted to depict what I had learnt about print, such as the CYMK print base,
this is why the text on the page was left black; meaning the design displays
each of the separate tones that can be found in print. To further visually represent
what I had learnt about print I wanted to include some analogue techniques,
before images can be processed in screen-printing they need to be made into
halftone based digital prints. This is something I never knew, having never
explored screen print before university, so I thought it would be interesting
to integrate it into my poster.
Final Poster |
Overall I think the poster was successful in meeting what the brief
required, it represents; both through visual and text, what I have learnt
whilst at university in a unique and un-obvious way. The process in which I designed
the poster I found interesting as it uncovered some elements of the course I sublimely
really enjoyed or took note of mentally which I didn’t really recognise as
being important until looking at them upon reflection. I believe that the initial
visual research I undertook informed the design decisions of the poster and has
given me a result which I am pleased with, taking into consideration grid-ing
to create a balanced, yet minimal poster.
