Instagram this year is not been a big part of my design
practice. Although I do understand the massive attraction to Instagram and the way in which people can use it to present their work and be able to get out
into the industry, I did not feel like it was appropriate for where I want to
be going in the industry. Through the use of my design account, I did keep
up-to-date with regular posts regarding updates to work I was completing at the
time. Although this is something that once I get into the industry I want to
clear off and stripped back, using my design account is more of blog style
posts to be able to keep the following up-to-date with my own selfless briefs,
and briefs that I truly want to develop to be able to put into my own personal
portfolio.
To me Instagram allows me to be able to get my work out on
a level to be able to get it out to people that I normally wouldn't communicate
with through the use of hashtags and exploring different specialisms. Use the
Instagram platform a lot to be able to understand new processes and see updates
within the design community, as well as using the explore feature to be able to
gain influences for visual ideas for my own practice.
I felt it wasn't appropriate due to the fact that I want to
go into an in-house commercial design setting. Therefore, through gaining work
through Instagram I wouldn't actually be progressing the way I want to progress
my career within a team of designers for a particular brand.
Due to the fact that I wasn't using the social network in
the way that some other designers were using it I decided to turn to social
networks that were more focused on the type of work I do want to be
completing.
The Dots
The Dots Profile |
The dots is a social network and promotion site specifically
aimed towards creatives, in order to promote them as creators themselves and
also, enable creatives to put together an online portfolio which they can apply
directly to jobs through. It is used by the world's largest brands to be able
to advertise new creative roles.
Due to the fact that I wanted to be a designer within a commercial setting, I decided that this was the best social network to be output
across my personality and portfolio in a way that advertises it and allows it
to speak for itself as well as my website. The profile itself allows you to
build up a skill set which people can then endorse, it also allows me to
directly post projects from my website enabling me to save time on recreating
the way in which they presented.
Was being part of the dots, I have applied to a multitude of
jobs some of which I've received interviews from. I've also achieved a feature
on the graphic design page as to be seen below. I believe that putting more
time into creating this profile and making sure that all of the connections are
made through this network I've been able to get myself to where I want to be
within the industry at a quicker rate.
